God's Love Frees Us from Craven Fear--Homily
https://calvaryepiscopalbatavia.church Fr Michael Rasicci's homily for the 18th Sunday after Pentecost, 10/04/2020. In these times two emotions are being felt strongly, anger and fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the Coronavirus 19, fear for the economy—personal and national, fear about the outcomes of the upcoming election, fear about the future Fear can immobilize us into not wanting to do anything. A little bit of fear is not such a bad thing. It can motivate us toward or away from certain behaviors or situations.
There are two kinds of fears as well, craven fear—of the unknown, an instinctual fear—and reverential fear—respect and homage. In the reading today from Exodus, the Israelites were experiencing craven fear. Moses had been on the mountain, talking to God for 40 days and nights, receiving the Ten Commandments. The Israelites asked for Moses to speak to them rather than God, for, if God spoke “they would surely die.”
In the parable of the tenants in Matthew’s Gospel today, the tenants stoned the representatives of the land owner and killed his son. Jesus asks his listeners, “What do you think the land owner will do now?”
Paul, in the lesson from Philippians today, reminds us of Christ’s love and sacrifice for us. God loves us and wants us to love Him. The Ten Commandments were to provide guidance to the Israelites on how to live a better life.
We need to find and to create the time to allow God to guide us to the way He wants us to live. God reminds us of His love for us every time we receive Communion.
